Since its inception in 2014, Burggraf's Ace Hardware Caring Fore Kids Charity Classic has significantly impacted pediatric care at Grand Itasca Clinic & Hospital. With over $1 million raised, this initiative has recently allowed Grand Itasca to build a sensory playground, a vibrant space designed to support and motivate young patients throughout their therapy journeys.

What started with a humble $26,000 raised in the first year has grown significantly each year, with $152,000 contributed in 2024 alone. This growth reflects the commitment of Burggraf's Ace Hardware, its partners, and our community. Over the years, these funds have supported projects that provide comfort and resources to pediatric patients, including:

  • Comforting Supplies: Over 6,800 teddy bears and 20,000 coloring books have been distributed to young patients
  • Clinic and Rehab Equipment: Contributions of over $62,000 have enhanced the pediatric rehab department with equipment to improve patient experience and outcomes, and essential tools in the clinic, such as a new hearing screener.
  • Newborn Supports: Three advanced infant warmers ($51,000) and ten bassinets ($30,000) were purchased to provide best care possible to our littlest patients.

Our newest project—the sensory playground—represents a fresh and dynamic approach to rehabilitation. Designed to provide sensory and functional exercises, the playground features specially designed equipment along with surfaces for biking and running. With spaces that encourage vestibular, tactile, auditory, and olfactory stimulation, this outdoor playground makes therapy engaging and effective for children of all ages.

"This milestone represents years of engagement and generosity from our community, making it possible for us to give our youngest patients the best possible support through their treatment," said Bri Wagner, Grand Itasca Foundation Director. "We are so grateful for the support of the Burggrafs and everyone who has joined us in our journey to improve pediatric care at Grand Itasca."

Steve Burggraf echoed Wagner's gratitude as he reflected on the community's role in the initiative. "Seeing our community come together year after year has been inspiring. The new pediatric therapy playground is a tangible result of what we can achieve together, and I am incredibly proud to be part of this effort."

Rehabilitation Supervisor Ben Guck, PT, highlighted the playground's positive impact on patient care, sharing how the new outdoor space broadens treatment possibilities: "This new outdoor area allows us to offer a wider range of therapeutic activities that make treatments effective and more enjoyable. It's a game-changer for our young patients, giving them a safe, open space to explore movement, build confidence, and have fun while working toward their recovery goals. Plus, it's designed to benefit patients of all ages, whether it's helping an athlete return to the field or supporting someone learning to navigate uneven surfaces with a walker or assistive device."

The journey to $1 million reflects the incredible power of community involvement and the steadfast dedication of Burggraf's Ace Hardware, local businesses, and countless individual donors. As we celebrate this milestone, we extend our gratitude to everyone who has made this project possible and invite continued community support in our mission to provide compassionate, advanced pediatric care to our community.
